About Us

The company was founded in 1895 by Frederick Phelps to manufacture and sell pianos in its workshops and showrooms in Kentish Town, which was then a flourishing centre for the piano trade. By the mid 20th century restorations and sales along with other musical instruments, sheet music and accessories were added to the range of products.

As the interest in instruments of violins family became more dominant in 1986 F. Phelps (Violins) Ltd. has established itself as an independent company specializing in  restoring, buying and selling violins, violas, cellos and their bows.

In 2003 the entire business was taken over by a partnership of new management with Mila Strnad as a Managing Director.

In 2006 after an amicable agreement, Mila Strnad has successfully taken over the entire business which is now managed from its present address in a fine large Edwardian property in North London (Southgate).

Mila Strnad with his engineering and musical background (graduate of Royal Academy of Music, London; violin, viola) was ideally suited to become maker, restorer and over the years an internationally renown expert and consultant in fine investment instruments and their bows with his career now spanning for almost 30 years.

The team at  F. Phelps (Violins) Ltd. is committed now - as for more than hundred  years - to provide the highest professional and personal service to all customers.
